Wastewater
Brevard County Utility Services operates six domestic wastewater treatment facilities located throughout unincorporated Brevard County.
Please note that many of the 16 municipalities operate their own wastewater systems, so if you are looking for your service provider, check out our Service Provider Map . Even though you live in Brevard County, Brevard County Utility Services may not be your sewer provider.
Treatment Facilities
Mims
The John D. Wright Memorial (North Brevard) Wastewater Treatment Facility is an extended aeration activated sludge plant with a capacity to treat 0.9 million gallons of domestic wastewater per day. This plant also provides reclaimed water for irrigation to the Indian River Preserve Golf Course.
Port St. John
The Port St. John Wastewater Treatment Facility is a conventional activated sludge facility with a treatment capacity of 0.5 million gallons per day, and provides reclaimed water to local businesses and medians in the area.
Merritt Island
The Sykes Creek Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility on north Merritt Island is an extended aeration activated sludge plant with a permitted capacity of 6.0 million gallons per day. This facility also provides reclaimed water for irrigation to residents.
South Central
The South Central Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility in Viera is an activated sludge wastewater treatment facility with a permitted capacity of 6.0 million gallons per day. Once the plant expansion is complete, the permitted capacity will be 12.0 million gallons per day. South Central serves the Viera-Suntree area, the West Cocoa area near I-95 and S.R. 520 and the Silver Pines subdivision in Rockledge. This facility supplies reclaimed water to these areas and several golf courses.
South Beaches
The South Beaches Wastewater Treatment Facility in Melbourne Beach is an activated sludge wastewater treatment facility. South Beaches serves residents and businesses in the cities of Satellite Beach, Indian Harbor Beach, Indialantic and Melbourne Beach. This facility supplies reclaimed water to the Spessard Holland Golf Course as well as several residential areas.
Barefoot Bay Area
The Barefoot Bay Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facility serves residents and businesses in the Communities of Barefoot Bay and Snug Harbor. This facility also provides reclaimed water to the Barefoot Bay Golf Course.
Why do Wipes cause problems?
Wipes are much stronger than toilet paper and do not break up or disintegrate during the flushing process. This allows the wipes to clog up the smaller lines that connect your house to the larger sewer main, and they often clog the larger sewer mains. The wipes routinely get caught in the lift station pumps. Flushing these items down the toilet are causing the following problems in Brevard County:
- Clogs in homeowners lateral lines and plumbing - homeowners must hire a plumber and assume this expense!
- Sewer lines clogging
- Lift stations clogging
- Sewer system pumps clogging
- Sewer overflows into the environment
- Sewer backups inside customer’s homes
- Increased maintenance costs
