North Reach Wins 2014 Best Restored Beach Award

The American Shore and Beach Preservation Association has announced that Brevard County's North Reach is a winner of its 2014 Best Restored Beach Award. The North Reach, which includes the Cities of Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach, extends 9.4 miles between Jetty Park and Patrick AFB. Restoration efforts on the once highly eroded beaches have exceeded expectations in the face of extraordinary storm events and helped turn a shoreline of seawalls and rock revetments into one of wide beaches and flourishing dunes. Recovery projects implemented in 2005 and 2014 have helped sustain the integrity of the project initially begun in the fall of 2000. The estimated $1.6 billion economic impact each year by Brevard's beach related tourism greatly exceeds the restoration costs.
