In the spotlight at Brevard County Fire Rescue
|New-hire candidates ready to start lifeguard academy |
BREVARD COUNTY -- Ocean Rescue had 70 people attend its second tryout on March 22. Staff was able to select 33 new hire candidates, in addition to the 19 from the first tryout in January, for the final new-hire lifeguard academy. They will undergo two months of rigorous classroom and beach training, including instruction on blood-borne pathogens and hazardous materials awareness.
Brevard County Ocean Lifeguards responded to 11,984 service calls in 2013, and was named Beach Patrol of the Year.
This weekend, the candidates start first-responder and CPR training. They work May through October.
Twenty-four towers are now operating on weekends, and that will expand to seven days a week as of Memorial Day. They continue daily through mid-August when school starts back again. At that time, Ocean Rescue will continue with 24 towers on weekends through October, when winter staffing goes down to five full-time towers.
