| What is MRRP
all about?
- Brevard County, Florida's Monofilament Recovery and Recycling
Program (MRRP) is an innovative recycling
project dedicated to reducing the environmental damage caused
by discarded monofilament fishing line.
- MRRP started through a grant from the Florida Advisory Council on Environmental Education, and is being managed by Brevard County
Natural Resources Management Office.
- Monofilament fishing line fatally entangles wildlife, is eaten
by and poisons many animals from birds and fish, to manatees and
turtles, and is a hazard to boaters, Scuba divers, and swimmers.
- Sebastian Inlet and the Indian River Lagoon are two waterways
that attract over 600,000 anglers each year to
our county. Because monofilament line lasts up to 600
years in the marine environment, MRRP strives to decrease
the amount of monofilament fishing line in our local waterways,
and in particular in the Indian River Lagoon, through cleanup
events.
- MRRP also encourages anglers to recycle their used fishing line
at 40 area tackle shops, several fishing charter boat locations, or at 127 outdoor bins we have placed around the
county. Look for outdoor bins at fishing piers and boat ramps.
- With the help of state grants, partners such as the Brevard
Zoo, Keep Brevard Beautiful, and the Florida Entanglement Working
Group, we have conducted cleanup events in addition to establishing
a network of indoor and outdoor recycling bins.
- MRRP has also put a lot of energy into public education by creating
posters (with artwork donated by Guy Harvey), fliers, fishing
clinics, public presentations, and three public service announcements
that aired on local cable channels such as ESPN, Discovery Channel,
and the Outdoor Life Network, and a "Get Involved" public
service announcement that airs on Brevard County's Space Coast
Government Television. If you would like a presentation at your
next meeting or event contact MRRP.
We are NOT anti-fishing,
We are PRO responsible fishing.
