In October 1998, Brevard County Fire rescue opened it's own Fleet Maintenance Department. Under the direction of Tom Hare (Fleet Manager), Tom supervises a team of 8 mechanics and 1 parts technician in a full service maintenance shop.

Fleet Maintenance provides a variety of services for the Brevard County Fire rescue apparatus fleet. They provide repairs and routine service on

  • 22 Mainline Fire Engines (20 career and 2 volunteer)
  • 10 reserve Fire Engines (includes volunteer engines) 18 Brush Trucks 2 Training Fire Engines
  • 6 Specialty Trucks (Air Truck, Tankers, Haz-Mat Vehicle, Command Bus)
  • 27 Mainline Rescue Units (Ambulance)
  • 11 Backup Rescue Units
  • 10 Command vehicles (Fire Chief, Chief of Operations, District Chief's vehicles)
  • 2 Training passenger buses

SERVICES

Fleet Maintenance has 3 service trucks, 1- 2 1/2 ton wrecker, 1- 5 ton wrecker, 1 flatbed truck, and
1 parts truck. They keep an adequate Inventory of parts on hand for repairs and maintenance. They also provide 24hr coverage for needed emergency repairs, 1 mechanic is on call 7 days a week.

Fire Engines and Rescue Units - Fleet does full service repair and maintenance on the fire engines. Service includes routine maintenance, engine repairs and complete overhauls, pump repair, transmission service, and electrical repair.

Brush Trucks - The fleet of brush trucks are used for wildland firefighting. These trucks are 5 ton flatbed trucks which are modified with water tanks and and a pump. Hoses, nozzles, tools, and other equipment is added to make a very versatile tool in helping fight wildland fires.

Pickup/Delivery - Fleet arranges pick up and delivery for all apparatus service.

Radio Installation - Fleet is responsible for all the radio installation for all vehicles.

Striping/Lettering - Fleet works on all the striping and lettering for the Fire Engines, Rescue Units, Brush Trucks, Specialty trucks, and staff vehicles. Engines, Rescue, and Trucks are lettered according to station assignment.

Incident Standby - Fleet provides service in the event of major incidents that may occur in Brevard County.
In 1998, Brevard County experienced it's worst case of brush fires. Deemed Firestorm '98, Fleet was available for service and repairs on all apparatus used to help mitigate the rage of brush fires throughout all of Brevard.

Tire Service - Fleet offers a 24hr coverage of tire installation and balancing. In the event of tire damage to a vehicle, fleet can arrange for on-scene and in-shop tire replacement. Fleet maintains an adequate supply of tires for use for all of the Fire Rescue apparatus fleet.

Small engine repair - Fleet offers repairs for small engines such as chain saws, ventilation saws, electrical generators, and hurst tool engine repairs.

Alignment Service - Currently, fleet does not offer an alignment service for the apparatus fleet. This will become another part their service in the future.

Fabrication - Fleet has a full service fabrication shop. They can fabricate different needs relating to the apparatus.

MECHANICS

The Fleet Department mechanics are ASE certified in gasoline and diesel engine repair. They are also E.V.T. (Emergency Vehicle Technician) certified in Fire Apparatus repair and maintenance. These certifications give Brevard County Fire Rescue a high level of expertise when working with or on vehicles for the Fire Service.

Fleet Maintenance Receives Award

In March 2001, Fleet Maintenance was awarded a Unit Citation for their hard work, performance, and teamwork for their work on the Fire rescue apparatus fleet. Since their opening in October 1998, Fleet has streamlined the service and maintenance down time, and has created a fleet of wildland brush trucks at a tremendous cost savings to the department.

Brevard County Fire Takes delivery of brand new engines

Recently, BCFR took delivery of 4 (3 pictured) brand new fire engines. New engines are delivered to the Fleet Maintenance department to be equipped for use. Radios are installed, striping and lettering is placed on the trucks. Once fleet is completed with the truck, it is sent to have all the necessary firefighting equipment installed - hoses, nozzles, tools, medical equipment. Once completed, it is placed in service as a mainline unit.
