FIRE PREVENTION

Hello and welcome to the Fire Prevention section of the Brevard County Fire Rescue website. The Brevard County Fire Rescue Fire Prevention Office is made up of 8 fire prevention professionals that have a desire to prevent the loss of life and property to the citizens of Brevard County.

Under the direction of Fire Marshal Frank Scates, the Fire Prevention Office consists of Fire Safety Inspectors, Arson Investigation, and the Plans/Review Office.

Brevard County Fire Safety Inspectors are Florida State Certified as fire safety inspectors. The Fire Prevention Office handles Code Compliance Inspections, Fire Cause and Arson Investigations, Fire Detection & Protection Plan Reviews & Approvals, and issuance of Permits for special uses.

Inspectors are knowledgeable about the Building Code, County Ordinances, and State and Federal laws which provides them an expertise in building inspections. Most facilities are inspected in 3 year intervals, however some are inspected annually as dictated by State law.

Inspectors also conduct follow-up inspections to ensure complete compliance. They also maintain either electronic or hard copy records and files, on notices of violations and citations, and other pertinent information. All records are kept for three years in accordance with the County Ordinance.

The Plans/Review Office is co-located in the Brevard County Government Center, Bldg A in Viera. The office reviews plans on any new constructions or remodeling of over fifty per cent on old construction, to ensure that required fire protection systems, such as fire alarms, sprinkler systems, hose cabinets, stand-pipes, etc., are installed according to code. They are also an information source for fire protection systems that have been installed and now must be maintained.

In addition to inspections, Fire Inspectors participate in continuing educational training to maintain the required State Certification and also to maintain their skills and professionalism.
