What
is MRRP?
The Monofilament Recovery and Recycling Program, known as MRRP, is
a program dedicated to preventing unwanted fishing line from entering
the environment.
Monofilament fishing line has been used by millions of fisherman for
over 40 years. This line, which is made to be invisible to fish,
is also invisible
to birds, whales, crabs, turtles, dolphins, manatees, swimmers, divers,
and boaters. Entanglements in fishing line have led to the death of
thousands of animals, as well as the amputation of the limbs of many
others.
Brevard County Natural Resources Management Office received funding from the
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Advisory Council
on Environmental Education to start MRRP in the year 2000. Since that
time we have established a network of 84 recycling bins located at
fishing piers, boat ramps and other waterfront parks, along with over
30 local tackle and outdoor sporting good shops that provide indoor
recycling boxes. MRRP relies on dedicated volunteers to adopt bins
and empty them. Over 4000 lbs. of fishing line has been collected in
these bins so far!
