| BUILDING BACK BREVARD'S BEACHES - HOME |
Brevard County received funding for two Dune Maintenance projects to be undertaken during 2006 and 2007. These projects will take place in the Mid Reach (Satellite Beach, Indian Harbour Beach, and the northern end of Indialantic) and South Beaches (South Melbourne Beach and southward). Together, they will repair erosion damage noted after Wilma and restore native vegetation lost during the 2004 hurricane season.
An undertaking monumental in scope, the 2005 Brevard County Shore Protection Project successfully restored to their full width the world-famous beaches from Cape Canaveral through Cocoa Beach (the North Reach) and from Indialantic through Melbourne Beach (the South Reach) using beach quality sand dredged from an offshore site.
Using beach quality sand transported by a seemingly endless convoy of trucks from upland sources, the 2005 Emergency Dune Stabilization Project repaired the hurricane-ravaged dunes of all developed coastal properties and most parks from Satellite Beach through Indian Harbor Beach (the Mid Reach) and from South Melbourne Beach through properties just north of Sebastian Inlet (the South Beaches).
Brevard County was successful in expediting efforts to restore the beaches and dunes of the Mid Reach to a condition similar to that which existed prior to the 2004 hurricane season with supplemental beach sand. FEMA, FDEP and Brevard County’s own locally-funded dune stabilization projects throughout the Mid Reach were completed April 25, 2005. Additional Mid Reach beach restoration (the Mid Reach Shore Protection Project) requires the completion of a federally-mandated Environmental Impact Statement which is currently underway.
The beaches along Patrick Air Force Base were renourished by the Air Force using dredged sand, using the same contractor and techniques as the Brevard County Shore Protection Project.
