EMERGANCY DUNE STABILIZATION PROJECT |
Three contractors, J.P. Donovan, Inc., Phillips & Jordan, Inc., and RKT Constructors, Inc. transported beach-quality sand from upland sources to place against the seaward edge of the existing dune bluff on developed property in the Mid Reach and South Beaches. This action was necessary to repair the dune erosion caused by the hurricanes last season. The dune stabilization project was completed on April 25th, 2005.
As a prerequisite to dune restoration, removal of any existing debris a must.

Sand from pits, like this one near the Space Coast Regional Airport just south of Titusville, was loaded into commercial dump trucks for transport to the beach.
The sand was unloaded and stockpiled at multiple staging areas along Highway A1A.
At each staging area, the sand was loaded into off-road dump trucks, which drove short distances along the beach transporting the sand to individual addresses where the sand was then dumped and subsequently contoured to the existing dune escarpment.
The Mid Reach received both emergency dune stabilization sand (the steeper sand seen toward the left in the image above) and supplemental beach sand.
