EMERGENCY DUNE STBILIZATION PROJECT |
The sand came from several source pits located in Brevard, Volusia, Indian River, and Osceola Counties.
The sand color may vary because it came from different source pits; however, the new sand has met specific criteria mandated by the State of Florida for turtle nesting beaches, including grain-size distribution, shell content, and color range.
The South Beaches received approximately 252,200 cubic yards of sand. The Mid Reach received approximately 307,300 cubic yards of sand.
All work was completed by April 25, 2005.
Construction was completed before the main turtle nesting season that started on May 1st. Daily early morning monitoring by state-permitted turtle biologists began on March 1st, in order to relocate any early nests to a safe location out of the way of construction activities.
Planting may take place after turtle nesting season ends on November 1st. A FDEP field permit is necessary for dune planting and can be obtained by calling 877-314-1329.
