PREPARING WITH PETS
In the event of a hurricane or disaster, Brevard County Animal Control and Animal Relief Support Agencies encourage pet owners to TAKE THEIR PETS WITH THEM (See Collier County EM's very helpful directory of pet-friendly motels in Florida) if they are evacuating the area; however, pets are not allowed in Public Shelters. It is strongly recommended that prior arrangements be made to shelter your pets with a commercial kennel, family or friends out of the evacuation area. If left at home, your pets can be killed, injured, diseased, traumatized or lost. If you have no other alternatives, Brevard County has two pet friendly shelters that will be opened for those living in an evacuation zone. Prior registration is not required; but you should call Brevard County Animal Services and Enforcement to determine if open. The shelters are located at the Port St. John Community Center, 6650 Corto Road and at the Viera Regional Community Center, 2300 Judge Fran Jamieson Way. These shelters allow evacuating residents and their pets to shelter together at an approved shelter. The shelters are operated by the Brevard County Parks and Recreation as well as Animal Services and Enforcements, and several volunteers and volunteer agencies.
